Computers are an integral part of our lives. The term “computer” is derived from the Latin word ‘C omputare ’ which means to calculate and to calculate means to do mathematical or logical evaluations. Invention of the computer has made many dreams come true even we cannot imagine our lives without computer. A computer is a machine or device that performs processes, calculations and operations based on instructions provided by a software or hardware program. It is designed to execute applications and provides a variety of solutions by combining integrated hardware and software components. Charles Babbage is called the "Grand Father" of the computer. The First mechanical computer designed by Charles Babbage was called analytical engine. It uses read-only memory in the form of punch cards. A computer can process data, pictures, sound and graphics. They can solve highly complicated problems quickly and accurately. Computer is an electronic device having big memor...

type of malware that propagates by inserting a copy of itself into and becomes a
part of another program. It spreads from one computer to another, leaving
infections as it travels. Viruses can range in severity from causing mildly
annoying effects to damaging data or software and causing denial of service
(DOS) conditions. Almost all viruses are attached to an executable file, which
means the viruses may exist on a system but will not be active or able to spread
until a user runs or opens the malicious host file or program. When the host code
is executed, the viral code is executed as well. Normally, the host program keeps
functioning after it is infected by the virus. However, Some viruses overwrite
other programs with copies of themselves, which destroys the host program
together. Viruses spread when the software or document they are attached to is
transferred from one computer from another using the network, a disk, file
sharing, or infected e-mail attachments. The virus is spread from one machine to
another by passing on the infected file, perhaps on a flash drive. There are
different types of computer infections, some more common than others. A virus is
a piece of software that attaches itself to another executable program, becoming a
part of the program itself.
Viruses do not evolve by themselves; they must have a creator to write their code
and begin their distribution. Some people psychologically cannot help but to
cause pain to others. They get a thrill out of watching others suffer, especially
when they know it is caused by something they did. Nowadays, virus writers are
likely working with spammers and hackers, turning it into a business instead of a
hobby. These people are in the business to hack into computers and steal
confidential information. Various companies, such as McAfee and Symantec,
have developed antivirus software that tries to prevent or stop attacks on systems.
Around 120 computers connected to the Delhi government’s information
technology network were hit by virus. Many computers linked to district
collectorates across the state were affected by the virus even though no major
data loss was reported.
There are two main techniques used by these programs: they examine files to see
if any compare to files in the virus dictionary, and they identify any suspicious
behavior that is occurring on the computer. With the first technique, if any file
matches one in the virus dictionary, the antivirus software either attempts to repair
the file, quarantines the file, or deletes the file entirely. In order to remain at a
maximum level of effectiveness, antivirus software performs a periodical,
downloadable virus dictionary update. These updates can be scheduled through
the program to automatically look for an update at a specified time.
